How Often Should You Mulch Your Garden Beds in Maryland?

By Jenn, Evergreen Lawn Care LLC · October 2026

Fresh mulch is one of the fastest ways to make a landscape look cared for. It also does real work: it helps hold moisture, limits weeds and protects roots from temperature swings.

How often should you mulch?

For most homes, adding or refreshing mulch about once a year is enough. Some beds fade faster in full sun or break down quicker, so a light top-up may be needed. If your mulch still looks thick and the soil underneath isn't showing, you may only need to rake it up and freshen it.

How deep?

Aim for roughly two to three inches. Thicker isn't better — too much mulch can hold excess moisture against plants.

The mistakes we see most

  • Mulch volcanoes: piling mulch against tree trunks. Keep it pulled back from the trunk.
  • Layering new over old year after year until the bed is far too deep.
  • Skipping edging, which makes even fresh mulch look messy.

When to do it

Spring is the classic time, and fall refreshes are common too. The best time is when beds are cleaned out and weeds are removed first.
