Fall Lawn Care Checklist for Eastern Shore Homeowners
By Jenn, Evergreen Lawn Care LLC · October 2026
Fall is the best time to set your yard up for next spring. Here's a simple checklist you can work through, or hand to a crew.
1. Keep leaves from piling up
Clear leaves regularly instead of waiting until all of them fall. A thick, wet layer can smother grass.
2. Keep mowing until growth slows
Keep mowing as long as the grass keeps growing. For the last mow of the season, many people take it a little shorter than usual, but not scalped.
3. Clean up garden beds
Pull weeds, cut back spent plants and remove debris. A tidy bed in fall means a much easier spring.
4. Refresh mulch where needed
If beds look thin, a fresh layer helps protect roots through winter. Keep it pulled back from tree trunks and plant stems.
5. Pick your pruning jobs carefully
Avoid heavy pruning of shrubs right before cold weather. Dead or damaged branches can be removed anytime.
6. Take care of your tools
Clean and sharpen blades and clippers before storing them, so they're ready in spring.
